Monthly Website Checklist
Even if you’re not actively driving traffic to your website yet (or getting Search traffic yet) it’s important to check it at least once a month as:
- It’s the place people who are referred to you will go and check you out before getting in touch.
- There could (and often are) issues you need to identify and sort out before you’ll get much Search Traffic.
- Sites break! With ever-changing browser and website technology, it’s not uncommon to have a page or page element stop working – you need to know when this happens and fix it.
We recommend actually setting a recurring date in your calendar each month to do this check-in. Otherwise it’s way too easy to let months go by without checking.
Here’s a few simple monthly check-in items:
Absolute Minimum Check-In:
- Go to your website and make sure it appears to be loading properly.
A More Practical Check-In:
- Search for your site in Google using your business name. Make sure your Google Business Profile shows up on the page and that your site is showing up first in Google’s “organic” results (note that competitor ads may appear above your own result).
- Make sure that your result appears fully formed and coherent.
- Open up Google Search Console and make sure Google is not seeing any pages as being broken and that all your main pages are indexed (more info and lessons to come on this topic).
- Open Google Analytics. Look at each marketing channel and make sure there have been no huge drops in traffic.
